    Weight

You can use your bathroom or kitchen scales to weigh your package, but make sure the weight includes all the packaging.

Be as accurate as possible to ensure you pay the right price. Your package will be checked by the courier and a final charge may be added if it's bigger/heavier than declared.

    Weight examples for common items*

    Up to 1 lb

    Jeans, t-shirts, hoodies

    2-3 lb

Shoes, small kitchen appliances, children's toys

    3-12 lb

*For reference only. Always weigh your package for the most accurate price.

    Dimensions

Tell us the dimensions of the package or box you're sending. You'll need to measure the height, width and length. The length is always the longest side.

    W H L

The size of an average shoe box is 13-14 inches in length, 7.5-10 inches wide and 4-5 inches high.

    Item value
    $ $ $

For new items, the value should reflect the current retail price. If you're shipping a used item that you've sold online, please use the price you sold it for.

    Top Monkey tip:

To find the value of a used item, try checking the average price your item is being sold for on eBay.

    Want to add protection cover?

If your package is eligible for protection cover, you can add this later on in the booking process - often it's free!

    Parcel contents

Give us an accurate description of the item(s) you're sending.

    E.g. 2 x t-shirts and 1 x baseball cap

Please avoid vague descriptions such as 'gifts' and 'stuff'. This could cause your package to be delayed.

For international shipments you will be asked to provide a more detailed description of each item when you complete your customs documents.

    How to calculate shipping costs

Shipping costs are calculated based on the distance your package needs to travel and the volumetric weight. The volumetric weight tells the courier how much space your parcel will occupy on a van or aircraft.

The good news is, you don’t need to know the volumetric weight of your parcel to get a shipping quote. Simply enter the length, width and height of your package into our shipping calculator and in seconds we’ll show you shipping quotes from multiple couriers. It's that easy!

Popular questions for calculating shipping costs

    • What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric weight is used in the courier and logistics industry to calculate how much space an item is going to take up in the courier's network. The volumetric weight of our package will go towards determining how much the shipping charge will be. Volumetric weight is calculated as follows:

Length x width x height divided by 5000

The number you divide by varies by carrier, but in general it’s anywhere between 4000 and 6000.

    • What is the cheapest way to ship internationally?

An economy service is the cheapest way to ship internationally, however economy does typically take longer to deliver, so an express service will be better if you’re in a rush!

    • What determines the cost of shipping an item?

There are a number of factors which determine the cost of shipping a package. The most obvious one is how far your package needs to travel. For instance, shipping within the US is cheaper than shipping internationally and shipping from Manhattan to Queens will be cheaper than shipping from New York to Los Angeles.

The other key factor is the size and weight of your package, generally shipping heavy packages is more expensive, however a light but particularly large package could also incur extra cost due to the amount of space it will take up on the van or aircraft.

    • What’s the difference between the Parcel Monkey quick quote and full quote?

The quick quote form is designed to give you a quick estimate of how much it is likely to cost to send a parcel of that weight to a specific destination, however this won’t be the final price.

To get an accurate quote, you’ll need to use the full quote form and provide us with the weight and dimensions of your package along with the sender's address (that’s you) and the receiving address. Remember that weight and dimensions are important when calculating the cost of shipping so you need to be accurate.

If you start off by using the quick quote, you’ll be diverted to the full quote form during the booking process.
