Courier left package in customs limbo

I've used Parcel Monkey to send both international and domestic packages and have been pleased with the service. I've been sending my grandchildren gifts to help address their feelings of isolation and anxiety at this time of COVID. However, the last time I used them to send an international package, I had a disquieting experience. The package sat in customs for many days and then I received notification from Parcel Monkey that my package was in danger of being abandoned due to unpaid customs charges. Neither my recipient (my daughter) nor myself had received alerts of the charges or how to pay them. I responded within an hour to Parcel Monkey's email but received an email that the offices were closed. I'm not sure if this problem with customs is because Parcel Monkey is a 3rd party or whether this would have been avoided if I had gone directly through FedEx. But the lack of timely and effective communication is problematic.
